Stalker Component Installation

Download Stalker

  1. Download the Component, or Bundle, from the above link
  2. Login to your Joomla Administrator, click on Extensions and then Install/Uninstall.
  3. Under 'Upload Package File', browse to the downloaded file and click 'Upload File & Install'
  4. After the component has been uploaded, you will be presented with one or two options, click INSTALL to create the tables and load sample data, or click UPGRADE to update the existing tables
  5. You should now see the Component 'My Links' screen.
  6. Click NEW, and enter your first link. i.e. Choose the required Social Network, such as Facebook, enter your username, choose the icon, and away you go. Don't forget to publish it!
  7. Once you've added your links, order them as required, then switch to the Module Manager, choose the Stalker Module (if you have it installed) and in the parameters, change the UseDB switch from NO to YES.
  8. Go to your site, and the Stalker Module should now be showing the icons from the component

Adding New Social Networks

The main reason behind developing the component was to make it possible for users to add their own networks. I get so many emails asking for new networks to be added, that I figured the best use of my time was to create something where people could add their own.

If you wish to add Social Networks that I haven't added by default, do the following:

  1. Go to the Component Menu in administration, and choose the Social Networks option under the Stalker menu item.
  2. Click on NEW, and enter the Social Network name, i.e. Yahoo Groups, and the link using #id# as the place holder, i.e. groups.yahoo.com/#id#
  3. To add images, create a 64 x 64 pixel icon, and upload it to /media/stalker/icons.
  4. The new network & image will automatically appear in the dropdowns when you add a new link in 'My Links'
At some stage, I'd like to extend the component to maybe send new networks to, and receive new networks from, a central server, or something along those lines.  That way, when users add new Networks, they would be available to everyone.  We'll see! :)
